<p>Pyrimidine derivs. of formula (I): (where each R, same or different, is H or alkoxy) which have valuable props. in the treatment of bacterial and protozoal disease, are prepd. by reacting an aldehyde of formula (II) with HOCH2CH2CN in an alcoholic medium in the presence of an alkali-metal alkoxide and condensing the reaction prod. with guanidine. The process is easy to carry out, and does not require the hydroxy gp. of HOCH2CH2CN to be protected by conversion into an alkoxy gp. or halogen atom. Yield is 30-60%.</p> |
