The invention relates to a roll for the continuous casting of rapidly solidifying foil or thin strip, especially from metal. Between the rotating shell (2) of the roll and the non-rotating core (1) there is an annular chamber (3) which extends over virtually the entire axial length of the shell (2) and over more than half of the circumference of the shell (2). Cooling fluid is fed into and removed from the annular chamber (3) via an inlet (14) and an outlet (15), more particularly in such a way that the cooling liquid flows in only one direction, preferably counter to the direction (D) of rotation of the shell (2). The core (1) can be rotated together with its inlet and outlet (14, 15) relative to the cooling area acting on the strip in order to feed the cooling fluid to that point in the annular chamber (3) where the highest thermal loading occurs at the inside of the shell (2). <IMAGE>
