A dye having the structure <CHEM> wherein X represents CN or NO2; Y represents CH2CH2, CH2CH2CH2, or CH2CH2-O-CH2CH2; and R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represent substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkoxy having up to 12 carbon atoms, substituted or unsubstituted aryloxy, halogen or NO2. These dyes are useful in assaying for Li<+>.
