The object of this invention is to make it easier for the driver to find his way while driving. It is no longer necessary constantly to reorientate oneself when viewing a street map, which is due to the fact that the axis and the direction of the path travelled do not coincide with the axis and the direction of the path indicated on the map. A street map is located on a map holder or is held the hand, with north pointing upwards; during each change in direction while driving, the map always shows the direction to the north, as it is fixed, while the path travelled leads in another direction. Thus the driver constantly has to "re-think" his position to find his way. If the directions of the map always were to correspond to the four points of the compass, finding one's way would be much easier. The street map viewer solves this problem in that one or a plurality of components of which it is composed - image screen, image transmission system, map holder, projector - assumes the additional function of a compass in the form of a main compass or a sub-compass and freely rotates, similarly to the rose of a compass according to the directions. The street map viewed by the driver rotates in accordance with the directions.
