NEW MATERIAL:The o-benzoylbenzoic acid long-chain alkyl ester of formula I (n is 8-14). EXAMPLE:Octyl o-benzoylbenzoate. USE:Useful as a photo-polymerization initiator. Since the compound is liquid at room temperature, various problems of solid photo-polymerization initiator can be avoided by using the compound as a polymerization initiator and, furthermore, the compound has high photo-polymerization activating effect. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting an o-benzoylbenzoic acid halide of formula II (X is halogen) with a long-chain alcohol of formula III in the presence of a solvent (e.g. hexane) at about 40-80 deg.C for 0.5-3hr. The starting compound of formula II is produced by converting o-benzoylbenzoic acid into acid halide by conventional method. As an alternative method, the compound of formula I can be synthesized by the isomerization reaction of a compound of formula IV. |
