An element which can be held in more than one stable structural shape comprises a tensile layer arranged to be relatively inelastic longitudinally. This layer may be formed from a plurality of parallel bands (2) of carbon fibre. A plurality of compressive blocks (4) are attached to the bands (2) to extend in rows along the bands. Furthermore, a plurality of transversely extending, inelastic bands (10) are also fixed to the blocks (4). If the bands (10) are curved transversely of the longitudinal extent of the element they are tensioned against the action of compressive forces produced by the blocks (4). This means that any structure formed from the tensioned element exhibits good structural rigidity.
|
