PURPOSE:To easily produce the title compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, etc., at a low cost, without using a reaction solvent or particular operation, by using isoquinoline as a raw material and hydrogenating the compound in the presence of an easily handleable palladium catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by hydrogenating isoquinoline having a total sulfur content of <=100ppm, preferably about 10ppm under a hydrogen pressure of atmospheric pressure -30kg/cm<2>.G, preferably atmospheric pressure -10kg/cm<2>.G at 150-280 deg.C, preferably 180-250 deg.C usually for 0.2-3hr in the presence of a palladium catalyst. A commercially available supported metallic palladium catalyst is used as the palladium catalyst (the supporting amount is 1-10wt.% and the carrier is activated carbon, alumina, etc.). The amount of the catalyst is >=2wt.%, preferably >=5wt.% based on isoquinoline used as the raw material. |
