PURPOSE:To more accurately detect elements in an image by equipping the title device with a position detecting means, a similarity degree detecting means, and a determining means to determine the success or failure of image detection based on the respective similarity degree data of the detected elements. CONSTITUTION:Since the positions of three or more elements of the image are detected by the position detecting means, each distance between the detected elements is detected by a distance detecting means, and each distance between specific elements is normalized by a normalizing means, normalizing data to indicate each distance between the elements are essentially made indifferent to the distance between an image picking up means and the image. Thereafter, the similarity degree detecting means compares the normalizing data with the reference values of a memory means previously assigned to the respective elements of the image respectively and forms similarity degree data for the respective elements of a reference image. Consequently, the respective similarity degree data indicate the similarity degrees of the positions of the respective elements of a photographed image for the positions of the respective elements of the reference image. Thereafter, when the similarity degrees of the detected elements are high, it is decided that the image picked up image is close to the reference image by the determining means, and when the similarity degrees are low, it is decided that the image picked up image is a different kind image from the reference image.
