The invention relates to a process for the production of a multilayer, protective and/or decorative coating on a substrate surface. In this process, firstly a water-thinnable (water-dilutable) base coating composition is applied, from which, in the second process step, a polymer film is formed on the surface. A suitable transparent topcoat composition is subsequently applied to this base coat, and the two coats are then baked together. The water-thinnable base coating compositions employed in the process according to the invention contain water, optionally organic solvents, one or more water-thinnable binders, aluminium flakes, optionally coloured pigments, a thickener and, as constituent essential to the invention, from 0.01 to 4% by weight, preferably from 0.1 to 3% by weight, particularly preferably from 0.5 to 1.5% by weight - in each case based on the total solids content of the base coating composition - of a complexing agent for Al<3+> ions. The invention also relates to base coating compositions of the abovementioned type for the production of the base coat of two-coat finishes of the base coat/clear coat type.
