A shock absorber (damper) (1) has a piston (3) guided in a cylinder (2). This piston-cylinder system is surrounded by a bellows (9), the ends of which are leaktightly connected to the parts of the piston-cylinder system moving relative to one another. The interior (5) of the bellows (9) serves as a receptacle for the hydraulic fluid and is connected to the interior (8) of the cylinder via throttle openings (6) or a non-return valve (7). By virtue of the bellows (9), which forms a flexible outer envelope, the shock absorber does not require sliding seals to seal it off from the outside. The hydraulic fluid (13) fills the bellows (9) partially and above the fluid level (14) is air, which communicates with the outside air via a connecting passage (15). This hydraulic buffer thus operates virtually unpressurised in relation to the interior (5) of the bellows (9). The shock absorber shown is here designed as end-position buffers, a return spring (17) serving for repositioning to the initial position. The shock absorber according to the invention can also be designed as a double-acting shock absorber or, for example, be integrated into a pneumatic spring system, in which latter case the flexible outer envelope is airtight. <IMAGE>
