In a method for compensating for speed errors which occur during the replaying of video signals from a magnetic tape, particularly when the replay speed deviates from the recording speed, for the purpose of fast copying, a number of lines of the video signals in each case being recorded in a track extending obliquely to the longitudinal direction, comparison signals are recorded and replayed with a fixed characteristic which is repeated line by line. Time deviations of the replayed comparison signals are measured several times per line and stored as correction signals. During the replaying of the video signals, the stored correction signals are used for correcting the speed errors.
