The invention relates to a process for the biological removal of phosphates from sewage (effluent, waste water) with the aid of a periodically operated biofilm reactor in which bio-P-organisms reside. Alternating periodically, waste water containing organic substances without an oxygen supply, to generate an anaerobic phase, and oxygen to generate an aerobic phase, are introduced into the reactor, in order to achieve enrichment and activation of bio-P-organisms. In the anaerobic phase, phosphate is liberated, with an increase of the phosphate concentration in the sewage. In the aerobic phase, the phosphate concentration in the sewage is reduced or eliminated, with phosphate uptake by the bio-P-organisms. The phosphates are removed by separation of detached biomass and purified waste water and, if required, by chemical precipitation of the phosphates excreted by the bio-P-organisms.

|
