To construct a secured trench, subsoil has to be excavated within intended, set-out trench boundaries. To this end, stakes are set at distances from one another on the trench side next to the trench boundaries, and subsoil is excavated in the subsoil-side area of the stakes after the stakes are set. The exposed areas of the stakes are provided with fastening elements, and, to bridge the distances between the stakes, elongated construction elements such as planks or the like are attached on the subsoil side to the exposed areas of the stakes by means of the fastening elements. After the stakes are set, subsoil is alternately excavated and construction elements (planks) are attached to the stakes, the construction elements being arranged in layers from top to bottom.
