PURPOSE: To easily read out a character by displaying each of all characters by M×N dots independently of a size code in the case of vertical display. CONSTITUTION: The display device is provided with a control means for judging a size code and converting a character into dot data corresponding to the size code in the case of horizontal display, converting each character into dot data consisting of M×N dots independently of a size code in the case of vertical display, and when the total number of dot data exceeds M×L dots, selecting a scroll display mode. Namely a driving means is composed of a selector 9, a refresh memory 8, a refresh circuit 10, and a driver 2, a control means is composed of a CPU 3 and a selecting means is composed of a selection switch 12. Consequently characters can easily be read out at the time of vertical display.
