A transmission control system for a motor vehicle provided with a clutch and a continuously variable transmission. The transmission has a spool valve (40) controlling the line pressure of oil supplied to a cylinder of a pulley device to change the transmission ratio. The transmitted torque (TD) in the transmission system is detected and a desired clutch torque (TC) dependent on the transmitted torque is obtained. The line presure (PL) is set to the minimum value required to maintain a torque in the belt of the pulley which is sufficient to transmit the torque (TD).
