A rotary drier comprises a cylinder (10) arranged for rotation on a substantially horizontal axis, heating means extending longitudinally along the inside surface of the cylinder for conveying heating medium, a rotary union (32) through which the heating medium is fed to and from the heating means, means (40-45) for providing a steam atmosphere within the drier, and means (21, 27, 31) for excluding entry of air or substantially limiting the entry of air into the drier. In this manner by providing an atmosphere of superheated steam the heat for drying is still predominantly transferred to the tobacco from the heated cylinder and the longitudinal heating means which are preferably paddles. |
