A toroidal transformer electrical insulating barrier (26) is made by winding a narrow constant width strip (19) of kraft paper, with a heat-sensitive adhesive (20) applied to it, over the surfaces of a semi-toroidal shaped winding form (1). The strip of kraft paper has much more overlap at the inside form surface (2) than at the outside form surface (3). A length (6) of kraft paper, with heat-sensitive adhesive applied to it, is placed against the outer arcuate surface (3) of the winding form, over the layer of narrow strip barrier material, and its slit lateral edges (7) are folded against the end surfaces (4) of the winding form. A contact adhesive (18) is pre-applied to points on the inside surface of the length of kraft paper to aid in fabrication. The kraft paper thicknesses are chosen so the cumulative kraft paper thicknesses are about equal throughout the periphery of the barrier. Several alternating layers of kraft paper can be built up to form the insulating barrier. The kraft paper is fixed into a rigid or semi-rigid form by the application of heat (30) and pressure (32) to the barrier materials which activates the adhesive. The winding form and insulating barrier are separated and the insulating barrier is used to electrically insulate toroidal shaped elements of the transformer.
|
