PURPOSE:To perform an optimum speed change control by setting a control unit to the basic transmission characteristic with an engine load and a car speed serving as the parameter, when the atmospheric pressure is larger than the predetermined value, and to the car speed-sensing transmission characteristic with only the car speed serving as the parameter when the atmospheric pressure is smaller than the predetermined value. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 10 has the transmission characteristic used for a speed change control of an automatic transmission 2, and the control unit 10 is set to the basic transmission characteristic with a load of an engine 1, that is, an accelerator step-in amount detected by a sensor 11 and a signal of a car speed sensor 12 serving as the parameter when the atmospheric pressure detected by an atmospheric pressure sensor 13 is larger than the predetermined value. On the contrary, when the atmospheric pressure is smaller than the predetermined value, that is, when an output of the engine 1 is insufficient due to a decrease of density of air, the control unit 10 is set to the car speed-sensing transmission characteristic with only the car speed serving as the parameter. Thus matching with a road condition in an area where the atmospheric pressure decreases, an optimum speed change control can be performed.
