Solar cells based on crystalline silicon are made by diffusion at high temp. of phosphorus into one face and aluminium into the other, forming n+ and p+ regions respectively of greater depth and lower concn. than by conventional methods. The process consists of (a) conditioning one side of the substrate with phosphorus; (b) passivating oxidn. of the surfaces; (c) depositing a layer of aluminium on the back of the substrate; and (d) causing simultaneous diffusion at high temp. of the phosphorus and aluminium.
