PURPOSE: To improve the regrowth of medullated axons and the possibility of a stable contact with electrodes by promoting the growth of the cut ends of the nerves in such a manner that the electrical connection between the cut nerves and the microminiature electrodes is attained, thereby minimizing the wounds of operation and lessening immunologic reaction. CONSTITUTION: The neuroconduit 12 of the nerve signal transmission device 10 is formed of, for example, an acrylic copolymer. The plural electrodes 24 coupled to the connector 26 on an electrode yoke 22 composed of carbon fibers form the circuit network of strands in parallel with the vascular cavity of the neuroconduit 12. The diameter of the individual electrodes 24 ranges from about 10μto about 50μand the distances between the electrodes 24 range from about 50μto about 500μaccording to the sizes of the vascular cavity and the nerves. At the time of use, the proximal ends 14 of the cut nerves are withdrawn into the neuroconduit 12 and are grown into the neuroconduit 12 by the regeneration effect thereof. The proximal ends are then brought into electrical contact with the circuit network of the electrodes 24. Then, the electric signals from the nerves are transmitted via the electrodes 24 and lead wires 30 to a prosthetic appliance.
