The invention provides for novel 7-(4-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine derivatives of the formula (I) (I) wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom, an ethyl or vinyl group, and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and processes for their preparation. The compounds of the invention exhibit superior antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and glucose-non-fermenters including Pseudomonas aeuroginosa.
