The method uses recombinant DNA techniques to produce a vector contg. sequences which codify a genetic system normally absent in the host organism but capable of transfer to guest micro-organisms, allowing their detection and determination. It can be used for determination of bacteria in health-related areas and of bacterial contamination of foods and also to measure susceptibility of different microorganisms to antibiotics.
