[Class 12 (i)] A bearing comprises a steel backing 10, a thin layer of bearing metal 12, and an intermediate layer 11 of a metal having a modulus of elasticity between that of the steel backing and the bearing metal, and a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than that of the steel backing, the three metals being bonded together. The thickness of the bearing metal is not more than half that of the intermediate layer. The bearing metal may be a babbit metal or other soft white bearing metal, and the intermediate layer may be of copper or copper base metal. The thermal conductivity of the intermediate metal should be greater than that of the other metals. The bearing layer is sufficiently thin to effect rapid dissipation of heat and may be between 0.002 and 0.015 inches thick. In the case of a floating bearing bush the steel backing 10 is coated on both sides with the copper layer 11 and bearing layer 12. The coatings may be laid upon one another by electrolytic deposition or by welding. |
