The method involves winding a thread onto a spool having a core with a flat bottom flange at right angles to it, and a conical top one. The thread is wound in layers each containing a large number of adjacent turns, the number of which is gradually increased during winding until the bottom flange is almost fully covered. After this, each layer contains fewer turns than the one immediately preceding it. Each layer extends between a theoretical cylindrical casing passing through the outermost turn on the bottom flange, and the top flange.
