Method for the digital coding of data in a data base, without a separator between the data, in which, having determined the frequency of appearance of the data, the data are assigned codes comprising numbers of bits which increase as the frequency of appearance decreases. Codes comprising at least one repetition bit are assigned to at least some of the most frequent data and the codes are adapted to the statistics of appearance of the data.
