Pneumatic cylinders of the types that are commercially available, especially those without a piston rod, are too slow because, owing to the construction, the inlet and outlet holes are too small when damping spigots are used. The full piston area is not available in the known damping systems because the damping spigot projects in front of the piston and reduces the cross-section by a corresponding diameter or, where hollow damping spigots are used, results in an additional restriction of the inlet and exhaust cross-section. Users require cylinders which are suitable for high piston speeds of 3-15 m/s and damp large inertia forces in the end positions. The invention ensures that the air inlet is closed and opened in accordance with the cross-section of the speed to be attained in the two cylinder end pieces by the installation of a resilient shaft of any desired length in both sides of the piston, the ends of these shafts closing the respective inlet and exhaust. The end acts as a non-return valve and, depending on the installation diameter, releases up to about 99% of the piston area for damping and restarting.
