PURPOSE:To form a fiber reinforced ceramic capable of relaxing thermal stress and being particularly suitable for a sliding material by incorporating ceramic fibers having a coefft. of heat expansion different from a base material into a ceramic matrix under a specified condition. CONSTITUTION:The title fiber reinforced ceramic contains ceramic fibers having a coefft. of heat expansion different from a base material in the base material wherein the density of contained ceramic fiber changes continuously. The ceramic is produced by the process described hereunder. Ceramic powder and ceramic fibers having a coefft. of heat expansion different from the ceramic powder are mixed in a vessel. The ceramic powder is precipitated in a precipitating stage, and dried taking care not to change the shape of the precipitated mass, and sintered under pressure. Since the shape of the ceramic powder is different remarkably from the shape of the ceramic fiber, precipitation velocity of both are different to each other in a solvent, so mixing ratio of the powder to the fiber changes continuously from the upper part to the lower part of the precipitated mass. |
