To influence the damping characteristics of shock absorbers, the two oil chambers (2, 3) are connected by a controllable throttle valve. The throttle valve can be adjusted as a function of the pressure in the two oil chambers. However, the handling of a vehicle depends, in particular, also on the pressure gradients. The throttle valve (8) can be controlled hydraulically to detect the pressure gradients. It is connected in the opening and closing direction to each of the two oil chambers by way of a shuttle valve (12). The connection in the closing direction is accomplished via a restrictor (15), however. The closing side can furthermore be connected to a resiliently expandable volume. <IMAGE>
