PURPOSE:To reduce the size and weight of the titled element and to execute image processing in a hardware-like manner by disposing a light transmittable proton donative material layer and proton diffused layer to the C terminal side and N terminal side of a bacteriorhodopsin oriented layer. CONSTITUTION:A purple film 2 obtd. by the culture and extraction of hasophiles is stacked like a substrate by electrophoresis and is dried, by which the oriented layer of the bacteriorhodopsin is obtd. The proton is actively transported from the C terminal to the N terminal when light is projected on this oriented layer. The proton transfer element for the image pickup element is obtd. when the proton donative material layer (PD layer) 3 is joined to the C terminal side of the oriented layer and the proton diffused layer (PA layer) 4 to the N terminal side thereof. An ion functional FET 5 is connected two-dimensionally to the surface of the PA layer 4 to detect the proton concn. of the PA layer 4. The proton diffuses in a plane direction as well in the PA layer 4 and, therefore, the range where the proton concn. is high spreads with time until finally the proton concn. restores the state of the concn. prior to the photoirradiation. The image pickup element having the threshold value at which only the certain quantity of transportation or above can be detected is thereby obtd.
