The present invention relates to a process for preparing the lactone 2-ethylidene-6-hepten-5-olide <IMAGE> by telomerisation of butadiene and carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst belonging to the group of cationic complexes of palladium. Process characterised in that the cationic complexes contain ligands, either nitriles, or phosphines, or nitriles and phosphines, or nitriles, phosphines and halides, or phosphines and halides, or alternatively chelating agents in which one of the coordinating atoms is covalently linked to the metal, it being possible for the other to be either nitrogen, or phosphorus, or oxygen, or alternatively sulphur.
