PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display element which has a high contrast and obviates tinting by specifying the thickness of a liquid crystal layer, designated as (d), and the double refractive index of a liquid crystal compsn., designated as DELTAn to the cell thickness d=0.476/DELTAn+0.18mum-0.476/DELTAn+0.50mum. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element is constituted by placing the liquid crystal compsn. twisted by nearly 90 deg. in liquid crystal molecular orientation in place between two sheets of substrates with electrodes, at least one of which is transparent and which are installed nearly parallel with each other. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer between two sheets of the substrates of the above-mentioned liquid crystal display element, designated as (d), and the double refractive index of the liquid crystal compsn. designated as DELTAn, are specified to the cell thickness d=0.476/DELTAn+0.18mum-0.476/DELTAn+0.50mum. The liquid crystal display element which has the high contrast and obviates the tinting is thereby obtd.
