PURPOSE:To reduce the selection error of filters and to obtain a display screen with high quality, by respectively obtaining the two kinds of a horizontal and a vertical differential absolute values and selecting a horizontal direction filter, a vertical direction filter and a horizontal-vertical direction filter by comparing the ratio between the maximum values of the horizontal and the vertical differential absolute values. CONSTITUTION:Two kinds of a horizontal and a vertical differential absolute are calculated and the ratio between the calculated horizontal differential absolute value and the calculated vertical differential absolute value is calculated. Then by comparing this value with two threshold levels, the three kinds of decision value is outputted. Based on these decision values, the horizontal direction, the vertical direction and the horizontal-vertical direction filters 9a, 10a and 14 extracting a chrominance signal are selected. Thus even whatever a signal which is YC-separated is, the selection error of the filter extracting the chrominance signal is reduced and an unnatural place on the screen is reduced.
