In a direct-current arc furnace system having a positive (2) and a negative (3) electrode, the electrode adjusting devices (4, 5), which are assigned to these electrodes, are independent of each other and are integrated into a respective voltage control circuit. The furnace is in this case operated in such a manner that the length of the arc of the positive electrode (2) is controlled during the melting phase as a function of the radiation load of the furnace wall and that the arc length of the positive electrode (2) is successively shortened as the degree of melting increases and the furnace walls become increasingly free. This allows for a more stable operation in various phases of operation and increases the service life of the furnace walls. <IMAGE>
