PURPOSE:To prevent a video signal from being recorded on a track for after- recording by controlling a carrier means so as to switch other track position onto which a recording head means is carried in response to the set recording mode. CONSTITUTION:A control means 70 controlling signal control means 54, 28 and a carrier means 66 controls a carrier means 66 to switch other track position onto which recording head means 34, 36 are carried in response to the recording mode set by a recording mode setting means 74 setting the recording mode of a still picture signal. In case of the after-recording mode, after the video signal is recorded, a track adjacent to the recorded track is skipped and the recording means is moved to the next track to record the next video signal. Thus, the after-recording is applied to an idle track.
