The invention relates to a device making it possible to control the valves of an internal combustion engine by virtue of an electronic control unit 1 with timing variable as a function, inter alia, of the speed of the engine. A microcomputer 4 samples, from the memory module 2 of the timing cartography defined previously on an engine test bed, the data (the timing angles) suitable for the engine speed which is determined from signals emitted by a rotational speed sensor 7 via an input module 5. By virtue of a sensor 9 which permanently determines the angular position of the crankshaft 10, the microcomputer sends, at the suitable moment, an electric signal towards the valves 11, 12 via (an) output stage(s) 14, 15. Various implementations of the device forming the subject of the present invention are founded on the variability of the timing as a function of the speed of the engine and on the possibilities of programming the microcomputer. <IMAGE>
