A local fax machine 11 equipped with a digitiser, with a printer and with circuits 140 for linking to a serial-type data transmission modem 400 is controlled by a computer 20 co-operating with an interface device 200 installed in the computer and comprising an input/output management circuit 210, a first serialiser 230, a second serialiser 240, and a clock and interrupt generating circuit 220. The input/output management circuit 210 is connected to a circuit 500 enabling the fax machine 11 to be slaved to the computer 20 and allowing control of a routing device 300 interposed between on the one hand the first and second serialisers 230, 240 and the clock and interrupt generating circuit 220, and on the other hand the serial-type modem 400 and the circuits 140. The automatic control and the routing circuits 500, 300 and the modem 400 are incorporated in a functional unit 600 attached to the fax machine 11. <IMAGE>
