Magnetic elements (16) are incorporated in the stator assembly (14) and an eddy-current braking disc (27) is fitted to the rotor (17) leaving an air gap (20) between the two assemblies (14,17) in the vicinity of the disc (27). Enlargement of the air gap (20) due to heating of the disc (27) is counteracted by spring-loaded attachments (40) comprising distance bolts (41), screws (42), nuts (43), washers (44) and springs (45). The spring pressure is preset so that under unequal heating of the disc (27) and fan blades (18,19) the stator (14) and rotor (17) move relatively and radial play is ensured by the slots (47). ADVANTAGE - Gap between the stator and rotor remains constant during prolonged heating of eddy-current brake so that loss of braking power is contained within reliable limits.
