An intracavity multimode laser spectrometer (IMMLS) is a detector for detecting various types of substance present in trace amounts in a test sample. It is particularly suitable for determining the individual concentrations of trace gases. In an IMMLS, measurement of a gas concentration is effected by intracavity spectroscopy using broad-band multimode lasers, in which coated semiconductor lasers are used as the active medium. The extreme sensitivity of this method, which far exceeds that of conventional multiple reflexion methods, is thereby extended in the infrared wavelength range from approximately 1 to 30 micrometres, in which all important molecules exhibit quantum transition and can therefore be detected. Through the use of semiconductors as the active medium and the enormous, electronically adjustable extension of the effective absorption length, a simply operated, small and robust (portable) detector can be achieved.
|
