PURPOSE:To automatically and properly set an offset by extracting a picture data from a picture memory corresponding to its address, applying a prescribed operation to both and calculating the offset of the address corresponding to each picture data based on the result of the operation. CONSTITUTION:A prescribed picture is read by a scanner 1, a picture data obtained by the scanner is stored in a 1st memory 2 and similarly a data corresponding to said picture (e.g., nearly identical data) is read by the scanner 1 and it is stored in a 2nd memory 3. A CPU 4 reads and calculates corresponding addresses (ai, aj), (bi, bj) corresponding to the 1st and 2nd memories 2, 3. Then the CPU 4 calculates a difference (ai-bi) between the addresses (ai), (bi) minimizing the calculated value and a difference (aj-bj) between the addresses (aj), (bj) as offsets. An arithmetic means 5 sets an offset of the address of one picture element of the 1st and 2nd memories 2, 3 by (ai-bi) in the direction X and by (aj-bj) in the direction Y to apply the arithmetic operation between pictures.
