PURPOSE:To improve the definition of a foreground image by adding a selected digital primary color signal to an analogue luminance signal outputted from a luminance signal generation means, composing it and an analogue color difference signal outputted from a color difference signal generating means and emphasizing the luminance and the saturation degree of the foreground image. CONSTITUTION:A means 21 which can select one of the digital primary color signals ER, EG, and EB when the digital luminance signal Y of a digital video signal is at a high luminance level and a means 22 which adds the selecting output of this selection means to the analogue luminance signal of a latter analogue video signal are provided. Therefore as one of the three kind of digital primary color signals ER, EG and EB is added to the analogue luminance signal in the display term of the foreground image such as a character, when the digital primary color signal related with the color of the foreground image is selected, the level of the analogue luminance signal can be raised in the display term of the foreground image. Thus the luminance and the saturation degree of the foreground image can be emphasized and the difinition of it can be raised.
