PURPOSE:To convert Ib type nitrogen in a synthetic diamond single crystal to Ia type nitrogen at a low cost, by irradiating the synthetic diamond crystal with electron beams, gamma ray, alpha ray or neutron ray and then treating the irradiated crystal with a specific pressure and temperature. CONSTITUTION:A synthetic diamond single crystal is irradiated with electron beams, gamma ray, alpha ray or neutron ray and then treated as follows under at least 10-30Kb pressure: The crystal is treated at proper temperature of about 1,500-2,200 deg.C over time enough to convert >=99% Ib type nitrogen to Ia type. Thus Ib type nitrogen in the synthetic diamond single crystal is converted to the Ia type nitrogen. According to the method, high pressure and high temperature is not required so much, because conversion speed from Ia to Ib become earlier when electron irradiation is carried out prior to super high pressure and high temperature treatment and the treatment at shot time is made possible and consequently the Ib nitrogen can be converted at a low cost.
