PURPOSE:To prevent a signal recorded on a track from being erased accidentally, by detecting the record of the signal on each track, and setting a recording waiting state by moving a head to the track on which no signal is recorded. CONSTITUTION:A head position arithmetic part 10 detects the presence/absence of the signal on each of the tracks 21-250, and sends each optimum head position to a system control part 5. Based on the information, the system control part 5 stores data representing the recording or the non-recording of the signal on each of the tracks 21-250 and data of the head position in a recording state storage part 16. Thus, after retrieval being completed, a switch 8 is switched to a contact REC side, and also, the head 3 is moved to the track with the smallest number of non-recorded tracks based on the data of the recording state storage part 16, then, the recording waiting state is set. In such a way, the non-recorded track can be detected automatically, and it is possible to surely protect the track on which the signal is recorded without breaking an erroneous erasure preventing lug.
