PURPOSE:To reduce the burden of a main control part by decoding respective code data which is received, retrieving external character code data which is stored in an external character memory, reading pattern data and disconnecting a bus buffer while retrieval processing. CONSTITUTION:A central processing means CPU13 decoding respective code data which are received and an external character memory control means 20 which accesses the external character memory 19 independent of the CPU13 are provided. While the external character memory 19 is being accessed, bus paths 14 and 22 between the external character memory 19 and the CPU13 are disconnected. Since the external character memory control means 20 retrieves the external character memory 19 while the CPU13 executes an instructed processing, it comes to be unnecessary for the CPU13 to retrieve the external character memory 19, and the CPU13 can execute other processings as much. Thus, the processing burden of the CPU can be reduced.
