PURPOSE:To certainly discriminate the leading end position of a puncture needle and to prevent the deterioration of image quality, by making the image processing of the ultrasonic tomographic image within the predetermined range set along the puncture needle guide direction of a puncture needle guide mechanism different from that in other parts. CONSTITUTION:The echo signal of the ultrasonic pulse received by a puncture probe 1 is sent to a digital scanning converter (DSC) 8 through a switching circuit 2, an ultrasonic wave receiving and phasing circuit 6 and a signal processing circuit 7. This DSC 8 executes image processing for making the puncture needle displayed on a picture conspicuous within the predetermined range set along the guide direction of the puncture needle and executes the image processing optimum to the observation of the internal organ of the body within the other range. The processed images are displayed on a display apparatus 9.
