PURPOSE:To reduce the power consumption by applying a start pulse signal to an image sensor after a light source is lighted for a prescribed period synchronously with a position detection pulse so as to start the scanning. CONSTITUTION:After a light source 104 is lighted for a prescribed period synchronously with a position detection pulse signal 111 outputted from an encoder 105 at every subscanning line, a start pulse signal 108 is applied to a linear image sensor 102 to start the scanning. Thus, the light source is lighted pulsively at every line to reduce the power consumption of the light source which shares most part of the power consumption of the entire device. Moreover, a picture with high picture quality having a short minimum scanning time for one line is obtained by synchronizing each signal.
