Frozen confectionery items are produced in non-lined moulds which can be opened up, in that the closed moulds are exposed to a food-safe refrigerant such as very cold air. An apparatus for production of such frozen or moulded objects comprises a number of parallel, endless rows of moulds, which move along a closed trajectory of straight and curved segments, in that the moulds each consist of opposite mould parts which are hinged together and pressed together during the movement along said straight trajectories, corresponding to hardening or freezing zones, while the moulds can be opened for delivery of the hardened or frozen items when they move along the curved trajectory segment, in which the moulds are divergently projecting from each other in order to produce the necessary room to open the moulds. <IMAGE>
