PURPOSE:To make a medium useful as a common medium and to enable stable use as a thermophilic medium at about 70-90 deg.C, by preparing a composition for a medium containing a hydroxyalkyl cellulose. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxyalkyl cellulose such as hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose or hydroxybutyl cellulose is blended with a substance required by cells and heated to prepare a gelatinous composition for medium. The degree of substitution is preferably in a range of about 0.5-4 degree of mol substitution and the concentration of the hydroxyalkyl cellulose is preferably a range of about 1-20%. The prepared gelatinous composition is usable as a common medium and further especially preferable as a medium for thermophilic cells requiring culture in a range of about 70-90 deg.C.
