PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of printing by constituting said device in such a manner that printing paper is loaded on a platen and a detection means sends a command upon detection of the loading and a carrier is moved at a time to a position outside a print column of the printing paper. CONSTITUTION:When printing paper 2 is loaded on a platen 1, a printing paper detection means 3 detects the loading of the printing paper 2 to transmit a signal. After this, the movement value of a carrier 4 from a home position stored in the first storage means 13 and the total movement value of the carrier 4 prestored in the second storage means 14 to a print column, are compared through arithmetic operation by a comparison arithmetic means 15. Then a pulse signal representing the results of the arithmetic operation is applied to a control means 17 to drive a carrier drive motor 6 through a carrier drive means 18. This results in the movement of the carrier 4 to outside the print column. For this reason, the carrier 4 is moved at a time to outside the print column, thus improving printing efficiency.
