PURPOSE:To improve the spatial resolution of a picture without changing a dot space in a recording system to obtain falsely a half tone picture with the aid of a binary area gradation reproducing method using a threshold matrix by combining and using >=two kinds of the threshold matrix in the order of an output density according to the respective output density characteristic. CONSTITUTION:In a thermal transfer recording device, a density pattern ROM 1 to output the dot data of 4X4 corresponding to a 6 bits density data, stores previously a dot pattern data. The density pattern ROM 1 inputs the 6 bits density data, i.e., a picture data, as a read-out address, and outputs the corresponding binary dot data of 16 bits. A head drive control part 2, as synchronizing with a clock signal from a timing control part 4, drives the respective heating elements of a hot melt transfer type thermal head 3 based on the binary dot data from the density pattern ROM 11. Accordingly, the number of the gradations can be drastically increased without changing the size of a unit matrix.
