PURPOSE:To automatically decide the field of an input character string, select a translated word according to the field and to attain a proper translation by providing a means for deciding the field based on an using frequency for every field of a word forming the character string of a first language. CONSTITUTION:An original sentence (English sentence) inputted from an input part 10 is inputted to a sentence analyzing part 14 through an input control part 12. The analyzing part 14 decomposes it to sentence units, the grammatical information of a constituting word is fetched for every sentence from a dictionary by retrieving the dictionary 16 for analyzing the language to analyze the structure of the sentence by applying an incorporated grammatical rule. A field decision part 18 retrieves a field information dictionary 20 in which the using frequency on the words constituting all the inputted sentences is stored, fethes field information and decides the field of the input sentence based on this information. A translated word selecting part 22 reads the address of the translated word of the decided field of the respective words from the field information dictionary 20, retrieves a language forming dictionary 26, decides the translated words of the respective to form a translated sentence in a sentence forming part 24 and display to a display part 30 through an output control part 28.
